Shelby Handles Ontario In 1st MOAC Showdown

A packed house in Shelby saw the Whippets take down Ontario 66-55 in the first meeting between the Richland County programs as members of the MOAC.

A massive 10-0 run to begin the second quarter helped fuel Shelby to victory, building a 26-19 edge by the break after trailing 12-11 through one quarter of action. The third quarter then belonged to Whippets sophomore TJ Pugh who poured in a dozen of his game-high 22 points in the frame as Shelby took a commanding 46-34 lead into the final quarter of play.

Griffin Shaver tried to spark a late Warriors rally by cashing in 13 of his team-best 18 in the fourth, but with Shaquan Coburn (17 pts) being Ontario’s only other player in double-figures, the Whippets closed the door for an 11-point victory.

Senior’s Uriah Schwemley dropped 16 for Shelby, while Hunter Hoffman notched 13 and Nick Amstutz added nine to help the squad bounce back from their only loss of the season.
