Tygers Drop Season Opener To Spire Institute
The Evolving Through Love Basketball Classic brought some of the top high school boy's programs in the state to Pete Henry Gymnasium over the weekend, including international athletic academy Spire Institute who defeated Mansfield Senior 59-44 in the Tygers season opener.
Spire took control of the contest in the opening frame, building a 15-7 advantage which they extended to 34-20 by halftime. Roger Merrell helped narrow the Tygers deficit down to 44-32 by the end of the third with a game-best 19 points that included five made 3-pointers.
Senior High would trim the gap to single digits early in the fourth with Shad Creamer scoring nine of his 13 points in the second half, but Spire's depth and athleticism would ultimately prevail as they pulled away for the 15 point victory.
The 0-1 Tygers return to action at home on Tues vs Ashland (0-2) to open OCC play.
