MOAC Boys Basketball

Shelby Stuns Ontario On Final Play

Ontario led at Shelby for the entire game until the final shot from an unlikely hero sunk the Warriors who drop a pivotal MOAC decision to the Whippets 63-61.

It appeared to be Ontario's night from on onset as junior guard Griffin Shaver drilled a trio of triples in the opening frame to help build a 19-7 cushion which the Warriors padded at 39-25 by the half with Shaver delivering 18 of his game-high 24 points.

Shelby would fall behind 50-31 early in the third before they began to chip away at their deficit with junior forward TJ Pugh dropping 10 points in the frame to get his Whippets to within 55-44 by the start of the fourth. The Warriors would go cold from the field offensively, allowing Shelby to eat away at their lead over the final eight minutes until the score became tied at 61-61 in the closing second.

Pugh would have the basketball and a chance to complete an amazing comeback with under 10 seconds to go but threw up an airball on his final attempt. Lurking under the basket, however, was soon to be hero Grant Hiatt who grabbed the loose ball and flipped up a reverse layup just before the horn that eventually found its way through the net to give the Whippets a crucial win in dramatic fashion.

Shaquan Coburn aided Shaver offensively with 13 Ontario points while Kolten Kurtz added nine. Pugh and Cody Lantz each had 21 to pace Shelby's scoring attack while Grant Gossom put in nine.

The Warriors dip to 7-3, 5-2 and now trail the Whippets (10-1, 7-0) by 2-games for the league title chase.
