Shelby's Fast Start Dooms Ontario
By: Richland Source
SHELBY — Shelby has put its 2019 Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference football title in the trophy case. But there seemed to be a bit of an afterglow remaining when the Whippets took the field on Saturday afternoon, and it was just enough momentum to key a 28-14 victory over Ontario.
Less than two minutes into the season opener, Marshall Shepherd and Blaine Bowman hooked up on a long scoring pass to stake second-year coach Rob Mahaney's team to a 7-0 lead.
A few minutes later, Andre Hill's interception and dazzling return put the Whippets in business again deep in Warriors' territory. Shepherd scooted in on a 3-yard dash to make it 14-0.
When Ontario turned it over again, early in the second quarter, Shelby jumped on the opportunity with that Shepherd-to-Bowman combination clicking for a second touchdown pass and a 21-0 bulge.
With 3:51 remaining in the half, the Warriors responded as Ethan Snyder tossed a 14-yard TD strike to Griffin Shaver, cutting the deficit to 21-7 at intermission.
Ontario made things even more interesting when Snyder found Nolan Payne for a 25-yard touchdown pass to pull within 21-14 at the 5:36 mark of the third period. Alas, that was the high-water mark for third-year coach Chris Miller's team.
Senior feature back Owen Fisher scored on a 12-yard TD bolt midway through the fourth quarter to seal the deal for the Whippets.
Crucial Ontario turnovers, and a couple of key stops were paramount plays by the Shelby defense.
The 1-0 Whippets are back in action at 1-0 Pleasant on Friday. Ontario (0-1) hosts Lucas (1-0) next week.
