Lantz Fuels Whippets Comeback Over Norwalk

It required some late-game heroics from Cody Lantz and company, but Shelby remained undefeated with a 57-55 win over Norwalk by erasing a 14-point second-half deficit in front of their home crowd.

The Whippets started the contest with early momentum, with all five starters scoring in the opening frame to hold a 14-10 advantage. Garrett Chapin then scored 13 of his game-high 20 in the second quarter to help the Truckers build a 30-21 halftime lead.

The Shelby deficit remained at nine following a back and forth third quarter where both teams scored 18 before Norwalk ballooned the margin out to double-figures in the fourth. With less than five minutes remaining, the Whippets found themselves down by 10 and mostly traded buckets over the next few minutes until Lantz helped fuel a rally.

A Jonny Devito triple with under two minutes to go trimmed the Truckers edge down to four then TJ Pugh made it a one-possession game with an offensive putback with less than a minute left. Lantz then stole the show by creating a steal and driving coast to coast for the equalizer layup and canned the game-winning jumper with under two seconds on the clock to complete the comeback victory.

Lantz finished with 17 while Pugh had a quiet offensive night with 10, but Shelby also received six each from Devito, Grant Gossom and Jeremy Hollaway. Garrett Obringer was the only Trucker in doub-figures aside from Chapin with 14 with Ryan Sowder netting nine.

The Whippets improve to 3-0 with 1-2 Marion Pleasant visiting them on Friday while 1-1 Norwalk will next face Edison on the road.
