Shelby Rides Lewis To MOAC Crown

A career shooting night for Shelby senior Jackson Lewis helped the Whippets clinch at least a share of the MOAC title with a 76-68 win over defending league champion Clear Fork at the Colt Corral.

Juniors TJ Pugh and Cody Lantz got Shelby (14-3) off to a quick start, combining for 14 first quarter points to put the Colts in a 17-10 hole. In the second quarter is where Lewis found his stroke, connecting on a trio of 3-pointers in the frame to help the Whippets maintain their lead at 39-32 heading into the half.

Lewis continued to knock down triples in the second half, with two each in the third and fourth quarters to finish the night 7-11 for a career-high 21 points. Shelby would outscore Clear Fork (8-11) 23-13 in the third to build a comfortable 62-51 cushion before closing out a victory to secure the program's first league title since 2011.

Pugh finished the night with 20 pts while Lantz added 15 with Jonny Devito pouring in 11 for the Whippets, who remain undefeated in MOAC play at 12-0 with a chance to win a league title outright for the first time since 1999 with a win at home over River Valley on Monday.

Five Colts ended with double-figures in the scoring column, led by Brennan South with 14 points, Merritt Burgholder had 13, Jared Scott 12 while Ethan Delaney and Bruce Swainhart added 11 each.
