With a spot in the Division II District Championship on the line, #3 Vermilion pulled out a gritty 59-51 victory over #4 Mansfield Senior in their own backyard, fueled by an impressive fourth quarter push.

 

Playing in front of a pro-Tygers crowd at Madison Middle School, Senior High took an 18-17 lead into the second quarter, extending their advantage to 22-19 by the break. The second half would not be as fruitful for the Tygers offensively, as the Sailors aggressive defense held Mansfield to a 26% shooting performance which included an 0-7 slump beyond the arc.

 

Vermilion outscored Senior High 16-10 in the third quarter then went on a 10-0 fourth quarter spurt that essentially ended the Tygers tournament. Senior guard Jonah Pfeil finished 7 of 14 from the field for a game-best 20 points with Mason Montgomery adding a dozen.

 

Quan Hilory’s 18 points landed him at exactly 1,000 for his career, joining an exclusive group of Mansfield Senior greats to accomplish that feat.  

 

Next up for #3 Vermilion (19-5) is the District Championship against Norwalk (22-3).
