District Semifinal

Ontario Knocks Out Vermilion For District Title Shot

The Division II Lexington District championship will be decided by a pair of Richland County rivals with Ontario knocking out second-seeded Vermilion 2-1 for a shot at Lexington for the title.

After the Minutemen stomped Huron 3-0 in the night’s first semifinal, the Warriors followed their lead, taking a 1-0 edge over the Sailors just 11 minutes into the match. An own goal by Vermilion that ricocheted into the back of the net off a defender was set up by a bending corner kick from Ontario’s Riley Lamport.

The Warriors took their 1-0 advantage into the half, but Vermilion would put home the equalizer less than five minutes into the second stanza. Following a blocked penalty kick by senior keeper Matt Weaver, who had 11 saves in the match, the Sailors were able to capitalize off the rebound to tie things up.

Then less than 13 minutes later, Ontario got what would prove to be the game-winning goal from junior mid-fielder Brennan Blaising who celebrated the score with a cartwheel followed by a spinning backflip. Ontario stayed on the offensive while Weaver and the Warriors backline played clean the rest of the way to punch their ticket to a second straight District Final.

The #3 Warriors (12-5-2) will next take on #1 Lexington (13-5-0) for a trip to Regionals on Thursday at 5 pm. The Minutemen beat Ontario 1-0 on opening night of the regular season.
