MARGARETTA -- Shelby fought their way back into the game late, but would slip to 0-1 with a 56-48 loss at Margaretta in their season opener.

Olivia Baker led all scorers with 20 points to carry the Lady Whippets offensively but saw her squad fall behind from the opening tip, trailing 15-9 after the first and 29-20 at the half. The Polar Bears extended their lead to double-figures at 43-32 heading into the fourth with Elliana Schaefer leading the charge, scoring a team-high 18 pts.

In the final frame, Shelby scored 11 of the first 15 points to cut the deficit down to 47-43, but Margaretta would make good on clutch free throws down the stretch to close out a home victory and 2-0 start.

​

The Lady Whippets suffered just one regular-season loss all of last season and will look to bounce back on the road at Galion in their MOAC opener.
