SHELBY -- Shelby landed a statement win over county foe Mansfield Senior, dishing the Tygers their first loss of the season with an 80-68 victory.

The Whippets (6-1) took control of the contest from the opening jump, flexing on Senior High with a 26-16 first quarter run. Mansfield (1-1) would trim the deficit in half with a 16-11 second quarter spurt, but would never challenge for the lead the rest of the night.

TJ Pugh completely dominated at the offensive end, finishing the game with a career-high 38 points on 14-23 shooting while grabbing eight rebounds and passing out five assists. Cody Lantz and Grant Hiat also stepped-up for Shelby with 29 combined points as Shelby outscored the Tygers 43-36 in the second half to secure the double-digit victory.

Shad Creamer led Senior High with 21 pts, while Maurice Ware put up 18 on 8-12 FG's and Amil Upchurch added 14.

Next up for the Whippets is a visit from Marion Harding (2-2) while the Tygers will head to Ashland (8-2).
