Madison Survives Ontario 2-1 In District Semi
Madison secured an early lead then held on late for a District Final berth, knocking out cross-county rival Ontario 2-1 in the Division II Semifinals at Lexington.
It took the 2nd-seeded Rams less than 10 minutes to build a 2-0 advantage, with James Wagner providing the first goal at the 30:55 mark followed by a Corbin Herr penalty kick less than 40 seconds later to gain control of the match. The Warriors would later respond after being stunned in the opening minutes, making it a 2-1 game just before the break on an Aiden Crider goal set up by Kyle Woods.
In the second half, sixth-seeded Ontario nearly delivered an equalizer on a number of occasions, with Madison defender Gavin Smith clearing a Woods shot attempt over the keeper just before it crossed the goal line accounting for the most dramatic opportunity. With a howling wind at their backs for the final 10 minutes of action, the Warriors applied intense pressure on the Rams backline, connecting on the crossbar with a late shot attempt by Connor McCauley, but could not find the back of the net to force a tie.
Madison (14-3-2) now moves on to face OCC rival and top-seeded Lexington (18-1-0) for the District Championship after the Minutemen dismantled Edison 8-0 for their spot in the final.
Ontario finished the season at 10-5-1 overall.
