Cubs Win District Title In OT vs Trojans

For the first time in 20 years, the Lucas Cubs are District Champions by defeating the defending D4 Willard champs of South Central in overtime, 46-43.

Both teams would find some rhythm offensively in the opening quarter where Lucas built a slim 18-16 advantage with Riley Gossom scoring nine points in the frame. The top-seeded Cubs created a little more distance on the scoreboard before the half, on top 29-23, holding the Trojans to just seven points in the second quarter.

South Central (21-4) would play their best stretch coming out of the break with a 14-7 third quarter push with David Lamoreaux netting seven of his 11 points in the period to put the Trojans in the lead to begin the fourth. A low scoring stanza saw the game tied at the end of regulation where neither side could make a back-breaking bucket to claim the title.

The contest would head to overtime tied at 43-43 where there would be no made field goals for either squad, allowing Lucas to lock up the District title with a trio of free throws as they held S.C. scoreless in the extra session.

District 6 Player of the Year Simon Blair was held to 13 points for South Central who also got eight points from Evan Legg and Isaiah Seidel added seven as they finish their season as District runners-up.

Riley Gossom was the Cubs top scorer with 18 pts, followed by Logan Niswander with 13, Carson Hauder had six and Ethan Sauder put up five.

At 25-1, Lucas will now move on to the Canton Regional to face McDonald in Tuesday's semifinals at 8 pm.
