Lexington vs Ottawa Hills

Division II Tennis District Title Match

Lexington Tennis Punches Ticket To State

It took a heroic come from behind effort to get the job done, but the Lexington boy’s tennis team claimed their 13th District Championship in the last 15 years by knocking out Ottawa Hills 3-1 at Lakewood Racquet Club.

The Minutemen took total control of their perennial district showdown against the Bears by winning every single opening set across the board. Ottawa Hills has had Lexington’s number the last two seasons, however, ending a 12-year District Championship run by the Minutemen by claiming the last two titles, and they would respond by winning the second set in every single match.

Lexington’s Blake Webster would eventually outlast Rahul Bais 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to win the #1 singles match but Ottawa Hills’ #2 singler Matt McGee would come from behind to defeat Benton Drake to square the match. A 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory by Minutemen #1 doubles combo Josh Mueller and Brent Webster would then set the stage for senior Luke Webster who trailed James Schwann 4-1 in the #3 singles match to secure the title with a gutsy performance, taking each of the last five sets.

Lexington (16-5) will now advance to face state #1 Cincinnati Indian Hill in Sunday’s State Semifinals.
