Hiland Stomps Shelby At Classic In The Country
Shelby's trip to the prestigious "Classic In The Country" girls basketball showcase would prove to be a lesson in the form of elite basketball intensity as perennial powerhouse Berlin Hiland smoked the Lady Whippets 99-25 at the Reese Center in the events final game.
The Div III, 5th-ranked Hawks overwhelmed Shelby for the entire contest with non-stop defensive pressure and relentless pursuit for every loose ball and rebound. Hiland also shot the ball well from all over the floor, knocking down a dozen 3-pointers with seven of those coming in the first half where the Lady Whippets fell behind 27-7 after the opening quarter and trailed 56-17 by the break.
Led by Bowling Green commit Zoe Miller, who finished the night with 22 points and 15 rebounds, the Hawks owned the paint with a 50-20 rebounding advantage that included 35 offensive boards. They also kept Shelby senior Emma Randall to just four points on six shot attempts, taking a commanding 76- 23 lead into the fourth.
Shelby would get outscored 23-2 over the final eight minutes to seal their first loss of the season, turning the ball over 38 times in the game while generating only 35 field goal attempts.
Five Hiland players would finish in double-figures scoring as they improve to 14-1 on the year.
The Lady Whippets fall to 15-1 with the defeat with Olivia Baker leading the offense with eight points and Haylee Baker adding five.
