Spring Sports Expected To Be Canceled

The decision most were expecting from Ohio Governor Mike DeWine at some point became official on Monday afternoon when he announced that students will not return to school buildings for the remainder of the academic year in response to the coronavirus .

“ Let me announce, for the remainder of this school year, our young people will continue to go to school remotely," DeWine said.

Which means spring sports will not happen for athletes in Ohio for the 2020 season.

OHSAA Executive Director Jerry Snodgrass previously stated in the memo, "If schools are closed for the remainder of the school year, spring sports will be canceled in Ohio."

No decisions have been made regarding whether or not schools will reopen in the fall, but it appears as though the spring sports season will be lost in 2020.

DeWine noted that Ohioans "have flattened the curve, but the situation remains dangerous."

He added that a "return to school now with a relatively short amount of time left is not a good idea even if the health situation was resolved."

In a Tweet posted by Ohio's governing body for high school sports, the OHSAA, they acknowledge the governors decision and plan to formally respond with an announcement on Tuesday.
