MT VERNON -- Behind Stephan Byrd's savage performance Canal Winchester ripped-off 45-straight points on the road to knock Mount Vernon out of the playoffs, 45-7 in the D2 Region 7 first round.
The 16th-seeded Jackets came buzzing out of the hive for a 7-0 edge less than 1 minute into the action when Jonny Askew pulled in a 65-yard touchdown catch on the opening series. Then Byrd got things rocking for the Indians who dictated the contest for the rest of the way as the junior blazed for 122 rushing yards and 4 TD's on just 18 carries and was dynamite in the return game as well.
Mount Vernon (2-4) had just 100 yards of offense after their scoring drive to start the game as Canal Winchester kept them behind the sticks for the rest of the game to advance.
The Indians (3-4) will now face #1 Massillon Perry (6-0) for a spot in the Regional Quarterfinals while the Jackets return to regular season action at Delaware Hayes (1-6).
