Willard Storms Past Shelby To District Final
In a rivalry showdown for a spot in the Division II Galion District Championship, Willard proved that size matters in a 45-34 victory over Shelby.
With four starters standing over six feet tall, the Lady Flashes dominated the paint by limiting second shot opportunities for the Lady Whippets who struggled to find offensive production in other areas. Shelby finished 11-37 (30%) from the floor, connecting on just 2 of 16 attempts from beyond the arc while Willard got a number of easy baskets throughout a 17-35 (49%) shooting night.
Only 12 Shelby points were on the board at halftime as the squad found themselves doubled-up on the scoreboard heading into the final two quarters of action. Lydia Wiers led all scorers with 14 points while freshman Sophia Niece put up 11 to pace the Lady Whippets offensive attack.
Shelby (22-3) will graduate 4 seniors from their MOAC championship team who posted the first 20-win regular season in program history. Willard (20-4) will now move on to face top-seeded Bellevue (22-2) for the district title.
