Lady Flashes Best Perkins For Regional Berth
The Willard Lady Flashes are Regional bound with a 58-50 win over Sandusky Perkins for the Division II Ashland District Championship.
The contest started slow for both schools who struggled to find consistent flow offensively, ending the first quarter with Willard ahead 8-5. Olivia Howard then came to life in the second, leading the Lady Pirates on a 17-10 run for a 22-18 halftime advantage with Howard dropping 8 points in the period.
In the third quarter the Lady Flashes flipped the momentum with Presley Feltner and McKenna Stephens combining for 13 points to push Willard back in front at 35-31 entering the last eight minutes of game action.
Cassie Crawford saved her best for last, dropping 11 fourth quarter points to stretch out the Flashes lead as she and her teammates converted nine free throws down the stretch to punch their tournament card into the next round.
Howard would score a dozen of her game-high 29 points in the closing frame finishing as the only Perkins (20-5) player in double-figures scoring, followed by Avery Bing with six and four points each for Kelley Baker and Cameron Kaufman.
Willard was led by Crawford's 22 pts with Stephens going for 15 and Feltner adding 13 to clinch the programs first district championship since 2002.
At 21-4 overall the Lady Flashes now advance the Regional semifinal at Mansfield Senior to take on Bay (20-5).
