Shelby Over Ontario In MOAC Opener

For the first time in 8 years, Shelby knocked off Ontario at the O-Rena with a 77-68 victory on the road.

Led by new head coach Nathan Loney, the Whippets brought the heat early, building a 16-12 advantage after the first quarter with Cody Lantz scoring 8 of his 16 points in the frame. Shelby would then extend their edge to 34-28 by the half with jr. forward T.J. Pugh beginning to get into a rhythm offensively.

Ontario’s Griffin Shaver showed out in the 3rd with nine points scored in the stanza and again filled it up in the 4th with 10, ending the night with a game-best 28 points. Pugh also put up 28 in the scorebook, dropping 18 in the second half as the Whippets outscored the Warriors 24-22 in the 3rd before closing out the win with an 18-19 effort in the final quarter.

Grant Gossom scored a dozen to help pace the Shelby scoring attack along with Jonny Devito who added nine. Kolten Kurtz joined Shaver as the only Warriors in double-figures with 14 while Shaquan Coburn chipped-in with eight.

Ontario (1-1) will next play at Lexington (0-2) on Dec 14 while 2-0 Shelby hosts 1-0 Norwalk on Dec 10.
