Whippets 2nd Half Rally Sinks Sailors

It was a first half to forget for the Shelby football team in their regular season finale at Vermilion, but the Whippets surged their way to victory in a second half they’ll never forget.

The Sailors dominated Shelby through the first two-quarters of play, leading 7-0 after one before adding 17 second-quarter points to own a 24-0 halftime advantage. Then after the intermission, everything changed.

The Whippets scored a pair of third-quarter touchdowns on runs by McGwire Albert (11 yards) and Tyshaundre Hall (19 yards) to trim the deficit down to 24-14 heading into the final frame. An explosive offensive attack combined with an opportunistic defense would then rocket Shelby into the lead as sophomore RB Owen Fisher began to take over the game.

Fisher ran for 178 yards and 3 scores on just 13 carries (13.7 ypc), finding paydirt on 4th quarter touchdown runs of 38, 66 and 4 yards to help put the Whippets in front. A Whippets offense that hadn’t topped the 40-point mark since Week 1 would accomplish the feat in the second half alone on this night, coming back to defeat the Sailors 40-31.

Shelby ends their season at 5-5 overall, missing out on the postseason for the first time since 2015.

Vermilion finishes their campaign at 3-7 overall.
