Galion Holds Off Shelby 13-12 To Force MOAC Tie
The 116th edition of the Shelby vs Galion rivalry came down to the final play of the game where the Tigers defense held up to secure a 13-12 victory.
Following a scoreless first quarter, that saw both defenses stand tall in their own territory, Galion eventually took a 7-0 edge at the 5:28 mark in the 2nd quarter on a 2-yard run by Trevor O'Brien. Shelby would answer back on their ensuing drive with an 18-yard TD reception by Blaine Bowman capping off an 8-play, 80-yard drive to make it 7-6.
Tigers kicker Dominic Pittman drilled a 26-yard field goal midway through the third to extend their lead to 10-6, but the Whippets offense would again respond with a TD drive ending with a 3-yard McGwire Albert keeper to put Shelby ahead 12-10. Galion's ensuing possession would see Pittman knock through his second field goal from 32-yards out to reclaim the lead at 13-12 in the closing seconds of the third.
The fourth quarter would go back and forth with both defenses making crucial plays at key moments. Then in the closing minutes, Shelby nearly drove 76 yards for the game-winning TD but Albert would be stopped inside the 5-yard-line as time ran out to end the game with Galion on top.
The Tigers (6-1) and Whippets (5-2) are now tied atop the MOAC standings with matching 3-1 conference records. Galion also jumped to #1 in Division IV Region 14 where Shelby fell to 10th.
