The Cardington lady softball team is headed to the State Tournament for the third straight season after an
11-3 victory over the Galion Tigers to win the Division III Findlay Regional.
The state-ranked Pirates (24-3) loaded the bases in the first but Galion starter Madelyn Thomas pitched her way out of trouble, then drove in a pair of runs in the second to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage. Cardington tied the game with a score in the third before breaking things open with a five-run fourth inning, capitalizing on five hits in the frame.
Galion (23-5) consistently made contact off Pirates pitcher Casey Bertke, who recorded no strikeouts in the contest while giving up six hits, but Cardington's defense was nearly flawless behind her and did not commit a single error. Thomas gave up eight hits while the Tigers had four defensive errors, leading to a number of Pirates scores.
The Regional Championship is the furthest any Galion softball team has ever made it in program history, just one season after the Tigers ended a 34-year district title drought.
