For the first time since 1991, the Vermilion baseball team claimed a district championship with a 7-3 victory over Shelby in Sandusky.
The Whippets (14-12) would take control of the game in the third inning, getting to Sailors sophomore pitcher Jacob Krausher for three runs in the frame to hold a 3-1 advantage. That's all the damage Shelby would do at the plate for the rest of the night, however, producing just one more hit the rest of the contest.
Vermilion (21-8) would strike back immediately with a big offensive inning of their own in the fourth, manufacturing six runs off Whippets starter Evan Bogner. A Sam Herron 3-RBI double delivered the major blow with 2-outs, making it a 4-run margin to help Krausher settle in from the hill.
Bogner (L) gave up 6 runs on 4 hits in 4 innings of work, while Krausher (W) went the distance, allowing 3 runs on 5 Shelby hits and struck out eight.
The Sailors will now advance to the Division II Bowling Green Regional to face Elyria Catholic.
