Stifling defense lifts Tygers to home playoff win over Southview

MANSFIELD -- There was one brief, furious scoring burst in Friday night's Division III, Region 10 playoff opener, but that was all that was needed for Mansfield Senior.
The Tygers' defense took care of the rest, and stood tall in a 7-3 victory over Sylvania Southview at Arlin Field. The Cougars broke on top with a 36-yard Trent Avery field goal at the 7:02 mark of the first quarter.
That lead lasted only a few seconds.
On the ensuing possession, Senior High's Amar Davis connected with Myles Bradley on a 59-yard scoring pass. Sean Putt's PAT made it 7-3 with 6:49 remaining in the first period, and that was it. Neither team scored again in a mighty defensive struggle.
That marked the first time all season the 15th-seeded Tygers (3-4) have scored in the first period.
Dakarion Mitchell ran for 82 yards on 16 carries to pace Mansfield Senior's offense. Quarterback Duke Reese hit 5 of 16 passes for 52 yards. Senior High managed just eight first downs but its 200 yards of total offense outgained Southview's total of 137.
Logan Moores notched 75 yards on 19 carries to account for more than half of his team's total offense.
Mansfield Senior played its second straight game without 11-year head coach Chioke Bradley, who has taken a leave of absence to deal with a family issue. In Bradley’s absence, defensive coordinator, Sean Adams assumed the head coaching duties as he did for last week’s win over Mount Vernon.
Bradley is expected to return to the sidelines for all remaining games.
The 18th-seeded Cougars dropped to 1-6 and have lost five straight after recording their only victory in a 24-3 defeat of winless Maumee in Week 2.
Senior High returns to action next Friday night at No. 2 seed Ashland (5-1). The Arrows nipped the Tygers 13-6 earlier this season.
