Shelby Downs Unbeaten Bellevue 56-43
The biggest girls hoops game in the Buckeye State on Tuesday night saw Shelby upset previously unbeaten Bellevue 56-43 on Hoops For Hope night in front of a packed house at Shelby High School.
Without the services of 2,000 point scorer Casey Santoro who was serving a 1-game suspension, The Lady Red (20-1) couldn't find enough offensive fire power, trailing 26-23 at the half after taking an 8-7 edge into the second quarter.
Cory Santoro found a rhythm offensively in the third, posting eight of her game-best 22 points for Bellevue in the frame, but Lady Whippets (20-1) senior forward Emma Randall also had a big night to help push Shelby's lead to 43-36 entering the final quarter of play. A stout defensive effort then sealed up the Lady Whippets third consecutive 20 win season, outscoring the Lady Red 13-7 over the final eight minutes.
Randall finished the night 10-17 for 21 pts to go along with 12 rebounds and 5 steals. Sophia Niese added 10 pts, 5 rebs & 3 ast while Olivia Baker put up 9 pts & 5 rebs. Gabby Turner joined Santoro in double-figure scoring with 12 Bellevue points while the rest of the team combined for just nine.
These teams scored the top two seeds in the Div II Ashland District where they could meet again with a trip to Regionals on the line.
