Senior Spartans Chasing Gold Medal Glory At State

This weekend in Columbus, St. Peter’s senior standout Alysse Wade will defend Division III State Championship’s in three different events; the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, and 100-meter hurdles. Although she was skeptical about winning regional titles in all three events last weekend against talented competition, Wade would live up to her “gamer “ status and accomplish that very feat, even breaking the state record in her division for the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.17 seconds.

Alysse says she “changes her mindset” for major competitions, and when healthy, has always delivered the best she can offer when the stakes are highest. Wade says cementing a prep legacy at the state track meet is something she thinks “about all the time”, adding that it’s a “big goal” to end her career with an amazing six state championships.

The only other Spartan competing at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium this weekend is senior Elijah Cobb, who is chasing his first state title in the high jump. He also has a high standard, fully expecting to win on Saturday, even though this is only Cobb’s second season competing in high school track and first trip to Columbus.

A strong showing at regionals with a personal best 6’ 4” high jump has fueled Elijah into the mix for state championship glory but knows he’ll have to go at least two to four inches higher to claim the title. He’s been putting in the necessary work to accomplish that dream along with Wade, though, and both feel confident they’ll be on top of the podium when the medal presentations come around.
