Lucas Stops McDonald On Final Play

For 21-20 OT Win In Week 11

The Lucas Cubs won an overtime playoff thriller on the final play of their Division VII Region 25 Quarterfinal vs #7 McDonald in Week 11 at Bob Wine Field.

The 2nd-seeded Cubs got into the scoring column first with senior RB Tommy Zirzow, who finished with 137 yards and a score on 24 carries, bursting in from 2-yards out with 15 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Dominic Schadl then answered with a 37 yd TD run of this own just over 30 seconds later to even the Blue Devils on the scoreboard.

The game remained deadlocked at 7-7 until Schadl gave McDonald the lead with 8:10 to play in the 4th quarter by pushing his way in from 2-yards. After turning the ball over inside the 15-yard-line three times, Lucas would finish a drive when it mattered as a 1-yard Logan Niswander TD run evened the score at 14-apiece to force overtime.

In the extra session, Ethan Sauder bursted through the middle for an 8-yard TD that gave Lucas a touchdown advantage. Schadl matched the score with a 1-yard TD run to pull the Blue Devils within 21-20, where they decided to try for the 2-point conversion and the win.

Pressure up the middle by the Cubs defense forced Schadl to rush a lofted pass to the end zone where Niswander was waiting to knock it down to clinch a spot in the Region 25 Semifinals.

#2 Lucas (9-2) will next face #6 St. Thomas Aquinas (7-3) on Nov 16 at 7 pm for a spot in the Regional Championship.
