Cougars Rake Mapleton 48-14 In Season Kickoff

By Brian Skowronski

The Crestview Cougars got huge performances out of their captains on senior night in a 48-14 blowout of Firelands Conference rival Mapleton to kick off the 2020 high school football season.

The Mounties would force Crestview into a 3-and-out on their opening possession then marched 76 yards for the first score of the night before the Cougars came to life. Chase Shifflet ran to paydirt on back to back possessions before a 45-yard Owen Barker TD grab made it 20-6 but Maplton freshman Kollin Cline took back the ensuing kickoff for an 88 yard score to make it a one score game.

The Cougars defense took over from there, with the highlight of the night coming from sophomore Mason Ringler who scooped up a fumble and rumbled back 40 yards to the end zone for the final score of the night. Evan Hamilton also pulled in a pair of Crestview TD's on connections of 50 and 19 yards from fellow senior Ross Kuhn.

Next up the Cougars (1-0) travel to face Norwalk St. Paul (1-0) in a key early season league showdown while Mapleton hosts Western Reserve (0-1).
