Chardon Rallys Past DeSales In 2 OT For State Title

Chardon erased a 14-point fourth quarter deficit to knock off Columbus St. Francis DeSales 31-28 in double overtime for the Division III State Football Championship.

The Mustangs (9-2) rode stud RB Quintell Quinn out to a 14-7 lead with 1st quarter touchdown runs of 74 yards & 15 yards, rushing for 217 yards in the contest. Hilltoppers QB Drew Fetchik found the end zone on a 1-yard scamper then tossed a 63-yard bomb to Blake Barker to even the score at 14 apiece, but Quinn would break loose on a 60-yard run in the third, followed by a 31-yard Jordan Johnson TD grab to give DeSales a 28-14 advantage to start the fourth quarter.

Barker snagged his second scoring catch from 36-yards out midway through the frame before Evan Ash tied the score at 28-28 on a 9-yard TD run late in the fourth to force OT. After blocking a Mustangs field goal in the first session, the Hilltoppers got a 33-yarder from Nathan Tager to claim the lead and would take the title after DeSales missed their game-tying attempt to end the game.

Fetchik finished the night 9-14 for 249 yards and 2 TD's, rushing for 87 yards and a score to help Chardon complete an undefeated 12-0 championship season. It's the Hilltoppers first state title since 1994.
